Nasarawa State ACReSAL Constructs Solar Powered Boreholes, Street Lights in Some Communities

July 5, 2023

The Nasarawa State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) has constructed and installed solar-powered boreholes and solar street lights in eleven wards of Akwanga, Uke in Karu and Loko Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State.

The installation project commenced with community sensitization and advocacy to raise awareness about the ACReSAL project development objective (PDO) and the installation of solar-powered boreholes and solar street lights in the aforementioned wards as part of their urgent needs.

The primary objective of the intervention is to provide clean and accessible water to rural communities that currently endure long journeys to obtain these vital resources.

In addition, the provision of solar street lights will offer alternative energy sources to communities, particularly during nighttime, discouraging the use of trees for lighting purposes. Upon completion, approximately 25,000 individuals will directly benefit from improved access to clean water and solar street lights in the affected areas.

In their remarks during separate sensitization and advocacy visits, the Chairman of Akwanga LGA, Hon. Safiyanu Isa, the Chun Mada- His Royal Highness (HRM), Pst. Samson Gamu Yaren, HRH. Amb. Habila Adamu- the Chemnku and the Emir of Uke-HRM. Ahamed Abdullahi, expressed appreciation and admiration for selecting their LGA as the site for this impactful community project. They pledged their unwavering support during and after the implementation and urged their respective communities to take ownership, ensure its enduring impact and long-term sustainability.

They applauded the project and described it as a significant relief for the benefitting communities, saying that it will not only alleviate the burden of walking long distances in search of water but also contribute to reducing crimes such as theft, nocturnal attacks and harassment. They noted that the project will also mitigate waterborne diseases across the communities and vowed to provide everything necessary for the project’s success in their communities.

Overall, this initiative by Nasarawa State ACReSAL holds immense promise in improving the living conditions of the people in Akwanga LGA, bringing sustainable access to clean water and enhanced energy sources to the communities while fostering safety and security.
