

Mokwa Floods: ACReSAL Team Commiserates with Community, Assures Mitigation Efforts

The ACReSAL team conducted an assessment visit to Mokwa, sympathizing with the community affected by the recent flood incident. Led by Dr. Joy Iganya Agene, Task Team Leader for ACReSAL and Senior Environmental Specialist at the World Bank, the team expressed sympathy to the state government, communities, and families impacted.
During the assessment, Dr. Agene attributed the flooding to urban encroachment into natural waterways, stressing the need for proper environmental and urban planning. She noted that ACReSAL’s approved design for gully rehabilitation at Mokwa may require expansion to address the current situation.
The team plans to review the site design, incorporating a holistic catchment management approach that would provide permanent solutions environmental degradation in the area.
The Hon. Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Abubakar Sadeeq Musa, emphasized identifying the flood’s root cause to prevent future occurrences.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Musa Salihu Bosso, assured the state’s commitment to supporting the ACReSAL project. The team also paid a condolence visit to His Royal Highness, Alhaji Dr. Yahaya Abubakar, CFR, Etsu Nupe, and commiserated with the community members.
